iTouch...Bluetooth...firmware update coming?
So what does an iTouch need to become an iPhone? Bluetooth enabled...a firmware update to import a keypad...some software in the form of Skype or YahooIM with calling features...or AppleComWare to log into your new ApplePhoneNet account? Maybe all of the above.
Interesting to see people playing with the iTouch to find little things that nobody knows of hiding inside. See below:
Smokin some serious phone company relationships, but who cares at this point. Apple could launch a wireless net with enough bandwidth to run its own phone company and then some. Providing better quality service and rates than AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and the rest. Think of it, would you sign up to get service from a company that provides the best user interface in computing? Knowing that every other company out there would be insanely jealous? OH YEAH!
Especially since those other phone companies are basically screwing the population out of every cent that they can and providing crap for service.
This blog is not for the faint of heart. It's for those that CAN handle the truth.

iTouch...discounts...VOIP...and more?
Okay, so a ton has happened since the release of the iPhone. Let's review for a moment:
1. iPhone released
2. some really cool apps released
3. new macs released
4. more cool apps for iPhone
5. New IPODS including iTouch ** announced/released
6. Price discounts for iPhone
7. Refund for Angry customers (I don't agree with this one). If you wanted it, you wanted to be first, you stood in line you got the phone, deal with it. Apple has set a bad precedent for every future product release with this. HEY I BOUGHT MY MAC 4 months ago and you dropped the prices, where's my refund! I can see it now. Let's not do that again.
But the really exciting thing is iTouch. WHY? Because it's an iPOD, it Plays VIDEO and MUSIC and has a WIDESCREEN and it's GOT WI-FI built in.
Oh...what do phones and networks have in common? In some cases you can use a phone on a network and that performs this little thing known as VOIP!!!
So what would it take for an iTouch to do VOIP and pretty much make cellphones obsolete? A little software...maybe a firmware update (unless it's already got the info in firmware...)
My mind is spinning here a little but, I think this could be trouble for everyone including AT&T.
Steve...I think you got a winner here. Christmas might be pretty bright for Apple and not from just sales of the iPods.
What does it take for an iTouch to use SKYPE or YAHOO's IM phone service? It's got web browsing built-in, it's got 802.11 b/g built in...it then has an IP address...it's got a touch screen which an app could be built for...does it have a microphone hidden in there somewhere?...
More later on.

Sold Out already?
Could it be true? Are they all gone? Not really. You can buy them on EBAY for exorbitant prices. I hear one of them is going for $60,000.00. Now who would want to pay that much for the phone that has the 001 serial number on it? And is it the real one? Or is that the one that Steve has in his pocket? Think about it folks, don't you think that he'd be hanging onto that puppy for the museum?
Okay, give it a rest for a bit. The phone...amazing. Do I own one? Not yet. Holding out for round 2. I am happy for Apple and the stellar sales of the phone. It's great to see. Sad to see everyone breaking them apart though. That's a bit childish, and really shows the world how insecure we are about some things. We just have this insatiable need to know, which gets the best of us somehow all the time.
Am wondering if Apple had released the names of those companies involved in this if the need to break open (sometimes with a hammer) this wonderful piece of aesthetically sound artwork which could not be operated by two good looking women on a Morning show. That cracked me up. I had to laugh because I know off camera were some Apple Techs saying "NO, the BUTTON does NOT control the movement of things, It's to get BACK to the HOME screen!" Ladies, it helps to listen when they're showing you the phone. It responds to touch :)
My eyes are now focused on Leopard. Now that the phone is out, lets get back to the business of Apple and the OS. Let's get to pushing Redmond back into the dark ages yet again with a more stable OS that does not require major hardware purchases to work correctly. One that does not bail at a hiccup with a single driver, and does not have a BLUE SCREEN that we still have to see when the OS has no idea how to get back to its version of the FINDER.
Stacks and Spaces and...a new sexy dock...what more can a man ask for? Am not sure since I don't have a list of the 300+ features of this new OS, but I cannot wait to dive into that pool and swim a few laps with my iMac.
Thanks Steve & Team for bringing a great phone to the Market. Congrats on the 500,000+ units sold. Now, let's get back to the OS and making the rest of us Mac-Heads happy :)
Best,
Mike

Did you get yours?
I personally decided to wait a little bit for my iPhone. Nice to let the hoopla die down, and since we're no longer in the Bay Area it was not as exciting to see things going on around the Apple Store at the Biltmore in Phoenix.
Now, had I been in Palo Alto where Steve showed up, I would have bought my phone then and there to say that "I had been there when...".
Some people are loving them, some are not happy and are at least for the next little bit locked into a 2 year commitment with AT&I WISH I HAD A SIGNAL "T".

I will confess that I did go with my wife to the local AT&T Store where they had two of these pinned to the wall with a Police guard. One guy was there who worked for Freescale, a processor manufacturer who was dissecting the features of the phone and the downside of not having GPS built-in. There was a gal on the other phone making calls to all of her friends and looking rather rude at other customers who wanted to try out the new phone.
I watched this in amazement and finally turned to the guy and said "May I". He handed me the phone and the connection was made.
Was I impressed? At the phone, the design, the weight, the fact that the display looks as good in person as it did when Steve unveiled it at MacWorld? At the fact that you could actually type on it and that things functioned as they should? Yes, I was impressed. What did not impress me was the internet access part of it as it was slow. Now we were in an AT&I WISH I HAD A SIGNAL "T" store and they should actually have a wireless network in there to show the strength of things, but theirs was probably searching for a signal to latch onto!
For all of the engineers at Apple who created this wonderous piece of technology...Awesome job!
For Steve and his discerning taste and asthetics...BRAVO
For AT&I WISH I HAD A SIGNAL "T"...GET A LIFE AND FOR GOODNESS SAKES SPEED UP THE NETWORK!!!
Thanks Steve for yet another great slice of the tech pie.
Can't wait for LEOPARD!!!

It's almost iPhone time!
Yes, it's true. It's almost time. Time for...well if you've been watching television over the past few weeks on any number of channels, it's time for...something good to happen..."On your phone".
We've waited for it since long before cellphones were available. Those of us who have lived and breathed Apple Computers since they first hit the market a long time ago...in a galaxy far, far, away (that is the property of LucasFilm).
The iPhone(tm) will be released on Friday. My thoughts about this are many and I'd like to share them with you tonight as I launch what will be a popular little blog called simple AppleWI.
The WI is wireless information. It's sort of a calling out to Steve to not stay locked into AT&T for long. I think that may be the downfall of the iPhone. Placing it into the hands of people who rarely use the backup software so easily provided to them to back up their systems and keep them up and running. I say this from being there and seeing the services fail due to this wanton incompetence.
What Apple really should look into is creating a network that allows people to not only make calls on the phones, but also to enjoy the kind of bandwidth that we in the US should have above and beyond the rest of the globe.
Sorry Japan, Canada, Asia...Norway, Sweden...places like that where our lousy 12mb/sec cable line is considered dialup speed for that which they use on a daily basis. I want to be able to get information on my iPhone in an instant and not have to wait for AT&T to figure out how to manipulate the databits.
I'm not angry, don't get me wrong. I am feeling a level of concern for all of those people who are even now beginning to get into the lines at the Apple Stores, who are refreshing their pages on browsers to get a glimpse of the order pages which will flow into existence at 6PM Friday evening when the product launch gets underway.
AT&T has a lot to learn and I'd hate to see them be the roadblock to success of a truly INSANELY GREAT product from Apple. I am personally proud to know Steve, and proud of the team that developed this product and is bringing it to market. It shows a spirit, a drive, and a dream of providing the best product in a class of products that drives us batty on a daily basis.
What kind of phone do I use? A Blackberry Pearl. The gem of TMobile. Am I happy with it? I was until the first time I received an email with html in it and all I saw was code. Because someone at blackberry decided that we all still needed to receive emails in TEXT FORM and they did not have the smarts to implement HTML into the email program. Someone recently took a shot at doing that, but it's in beta and has a long way to go.
I want my iPhone to be useful, to be the best, and give me every reason in the world to foot the pricetag as well as the disconnect fees from TMOBILE because I want to only use an Apple product for my calls.
AT&T is in my opinion the worst place for the iPhone to be hosted. But I am sure there's some logic to this and perhaps it goes back to the place of the T in the marketplace. The main company has been around for a number of years and actually used to provide decent services. Maybe having iPhone as their flagship product will allow them to extract their heads from their backsides and provide some real "CUSTOMER SERVICE". If they don't and the iPhone feels the heat from that, I hope that my friends at Apple have a backup in place to take over, and that they pull the plug on the T quickly.
That's my .02 on this matter for the moment. Leave your comments, and be nice, or be deleted.
Michael Murdock - AppleWI...it's a great thought for the NeXT big Apple Service Offering. How about it Steve!
